Moving Forward: Contract Agreements: Europe Liars or Flyers?
In France, Wilbur hoped to demonstrate his Flyer's capabilities not only to the government but also the public. When he arrived, many French civilians were doubtful of him. Local newspapers ran headlines such as, "Liars or Flyers?".
Wilbur had shipped their 1908 Flyer to France in pieces. When he arrived and opened the crates, he found damage to the pieces, torn fabric, and broken wooden planks. Working alone, it took Wilbur a total of seven weeks to completely reconstruct the Flyer. With the Flyer reconstructed, Wilbur was ready for his demonstration; it was just a matter of waiting a bit for the perfect day to fly. That day came on August 8, 1908. Wilbur described it to Orville as, "the finest for a first trial we have had for several weeks". |

The grandstand at the military field in Le Mans was only partially full, as many people still thought of the Wrights as fakes. Even still, Wilbur took off from that military field in his 1908 Flyer and successfully flew two circles around the field before gently landing. The half-grandstand of people witnessing this event were amazed by his flight. Over the next week, Wilbur flew eight more times to larger and larger crowds. The French now believed in his success. Newspapers ran headlines such as, "The Most Wonderful Flying Machine That Has Ever Been Made".
"The excitement aroused by the short flights... is almost beyond comprehension. The French have simply become wild. Instead of doubting that we could do anything they are ready to believe that we can do everything."
-Wilbur Wright
"I've seen him! I've seen them! Yes! I have today seen Wilbur Wright and his great white bird, the beautiful mechanical bird.... There is no doubt! Wilbur and Orville Wright have well and truly flown."
